Walking Tours of Downtown Reveal Culpeper’s Revolutionary History

CULPEPER, VA – The Museum of Culpeper History will offer monthly walking tours of downtown Culpeper’s Revolutionary War History.  The first tour will be offered, Saturday, May 18, at 10:00 AM.  The tours are being offered as part of Culpeper’s VA250 programming commemorating the 250th anniversary of Virginia’s role during the Revolutionary War.

“Most people have heard of our Culpeper Minute Men, or at least have seen their rattlesnake flag with the phrase ‘Liberty or Death, Don’t Tread on Me,’” said John Christiansen, the museum’s executive director.  “Those are phrases that have resonated with Americans from the very beginning.  It’s one of the more popular specialty license plates today.”

Christiansen went on to say that many people are unaware of the role the minute men played in American independence or their connection to America’s founding documents.  “The minute men participated in multiple events that are listed in the Declaration of Independence.  That’s how close we are to the story of American liberty in Culpeper.”

Christiansen went on to list other Culpeper events that shaped the new nation.  “We have challenges to religious liberty that get built into the Bill of Rights, we have western expansion and the conflict with Native cultures, we have the debate over representative government.  It all happened to our Culpeper ancestors, and much of it right here in downtown.

A full schedule of tours is available on the museum’s website at www.culpepermuseum.com.   The registration fee is $12.50 per person. For more information call 540-829-1749 or email director@culpepermuseum.com.
